Orlando Bloom has revealed what was “so good” about his new London-set film, Deep Cover.

The action comedy, set for release on Prime Video on Thursday (12 June), follows an improv teacher (Bryce Dallas Howard) and two of her students – played by Bloom and Nick Mohammed respectively – as they are tasked with infiltrating a criminal gang.

Boasting a stacked supporting cast including Sean Bean, Paddy Considine and Ian McShane, Tom Kingsley’s film sees Bloom play a struggling actor who takes himself “very seriously”, with the actor relishing the challenge of the part.

“It is so good,” Bloom exclusively told Digital Spy. “Taking yourself too seriously is something [that’s] so easy to do – [I’ve] probably done it myself in the past. I loved the idea of getting involved because all I had to do was play it deadly serious.”

“[I] imagined myself coming out of drama school and being depressed at not getting to do anything for my career and dreaming of a [better] life,” continued the actor, who explained that the part served as a reminder of how “lucky” he was.

“It reminded me of how lucky we are to do what we do. But yeah, it is low hanging fruit. I felt the torture of an actor out of work [while] desperately wanting to be in work – but we all had that,” added Bloom, who has appeared in the Lord of the Rings and Pirates of the Caribbean series’.

Kingsley, whose credits include Ghosts and Stath Lets Flats, had previously teased aspects of Bloom’s character, telling Entertainment Weekly: “He really commits [to the job] and he is improvising out of control, which is quite scary to his friends.”

“Orlando was really smart about why the character was funny and how he could play it by basically committing completely to the role. He’s really up for making fun of himself,” added the director.

Deep Cover is released on Prime Video on 12 June.
